Practical tips for first-time visitors
Bring HKD plus CNY, or a card that works in both. Octopus is HK-only.
Download DiDi before crossing (mainland's Uber-equivalent). English interface, accepts credit cards.
Off-peak weekday crossings (10am-3pm) are fastest. Weekends add 30-60 min at the border.
Get mainland data via HK telco day-pass or eSIM app before you leave.
If you rely on Google, Gmail, or WhatsApp, set up a VPN before crossing.
